Artist Statement

Kathryn Tuck

I grew up surrounded by the art and artists of Cape Ann.  As a child I spent entire afternoons with my nose pressed against the gallery windows of Rockport’s finest painters.  Leaning a slice of wall board--salvaged from continuous renovations at Tuck Inn--against a fence at the edge of a class, I mimicked the greats.  Birthday presents were workshops with local artists--Van Wyck, Terelak, Callahan and Czerepak; and as an adult, I was strongly influenced by study with Ted Goerschner.

I love to paint the New England woods and coastline and old shacks with tumbled heaps of fishing gear.  I go for the light..reflections in a millpond, sunrise backlighting trees along a woodsy path, prisms of surf crashing against a black cliff, splashes of high color dancing around the canvas.  I love everything about painting from the creamy feel of the oil paint to the “sing” of the brush scrubbing across canvas.

Kathryn received degrees from Tufts University and Regis College. After a 31-year career i
n teaching, she now paints full time.  Kathryn is a member of the Rockport Art Association and the Copley Society.  Her award-winning work can be found in private and corporate collections here and abroad.
